Materials Fee: $116.00 includes: a wooden picture frame, 8” x 10,” chopped and joined; 1 book of 22k gold leaf, cheese cloth, horse hair cloth, 1lb.whiting, wet dry sand paper, cotton, mica powder, rabbit skin glue, Selhamin red clay, shellac, rottenstone, pumice powder, raw and burnt umber earth pigments.

Tools Fee: $134.00 includes: 2 brushes, a gilder’s tip, pad, an agate burnisher, a gilder’s knife, a mop and a Monarch color chart. Punching tools will be available for purchasing.

Description: The class will focus on making pastiglia, raised gesso, and learning how to apply it to the surface of a frame. The class will also cover the making and application of bole, water gilding, burnishing and grannito (punching), as well as discussions of various ways of toning the frame with pigments and shellacs. Experimentation will be encouraged. Students will learn how to handle gold leaf and to gild out of a book of gold leaf. Each student will need to purchase a supply kit which will include one 8” x 10” wooden frame, 1 book of gold leaf, cheesecloth, horsehair cloth, 1 lb. Whiting, wet dry sand paper, cotton, mica powder, rabbit skin glue, selhamin red bole, shellac, rottenstone, pumice powder, raw and burnt umber. Students must buy a tool kit containing brushes, a gilder’s tip, and gilder’s mop, pad and agate burnisher, a gilder’s knife, and a Monarch gold color chart.
